The special enlisted insignia of First Sergeant is specifically reserved for those individuals who hold the position of First Sergeant within a unit. This insignia signifies their unique responsibilities and roles as a senior enlisted leader who focuses on the welfare, discipline, and overall readiness of the enlisted personnel in their charge. The requirements to wear this insignia include being appointed to that specific position, emphasizing the leadership and mentorship that comes with the role.

While other ranks may have their own insignia, the First Sergeant insignia is not simply a rank but rather a designation tied to specific duties and responsibilities. Thus, only those who are officially assigned as First Sergeants are authorized to wear this distinguishing insignia, highlighting the importance of the role they fulfill within the military structure.
